The resveratrol benefits have been studied by scientists. A recent study by researchers from the University of Leicester in the UK involving 20 patients with resectable colon cancer, who were all scheduled for surgery, were each given a daily dose of Resveratrol.

Ten of the patients received a 0.5 g dose and the other ten were given a 1 g dose daily for 8 days prior to their surgical procedure. The researchers discovered that Resveratrol metabolites were present in the colorectal tissue and in fact, showed a decrease in the cancerous tumor cell biopsy by 88%.

The study concluded that the data showed a decrease in tumor cell proliferation markers after the ingestion of Resveratrol even in small doses. This is only one of the many resveratrol benefits!

While this is not totally conclusive that Resveratrol is an anti colon cancer agent, it does support other research that seems to point to the amazing anti cancer properties that Resveratrol displays in the laboratory.

The Long List of Resveratrol Benefits

Some people are even calling resveratrol the fountain of youth. It has amazing anti aging properties in it, as well as weight loss, and cancer fighting agents in the resveratrol. All in all, it has seemed to be extremely beneficial in the studies that scientists have done on this amazing supplement.

Pfizer Inc has had their hired scientists try and debunk resveratrol’s effectiveness and strike a blow at their arch rival, GlaxoSmithKlein, which has over $720 million invested in creating synthetic drugs that mimic resveratrol.

The ‘corporate’ researchers published their study in January in the Journal of Biological Chemistry that questioned previous studies that suggests resveratrol may enhance an enzyme that slows the aging process.

These researchers suggested that resveratrol is not a direct activator of the sirtuin gene or any other biochemical pathway – as if this is simply a linear straightforward process.

The research in the this field seems to be overwelming in favor of resveratrol being beneficial in may aspects for maintaining good health. This could just be another instance of corporate “bad mouthing” and results oriented scientific study that can be easily skewed to show a specific result.

The potential health benefits of resveratrol are certainly no longer a secret. The naturally occurring compound has been tied to a huge range of health benefits. Among these the compound has shown an ability to fight off deadly, widespread illnesses such as cardiovascular disease and certain cancers. Studies performed on mice now also show that resveratrol can be used to combat diabetes.

The core issue for future medical developments has been understanding not just the effects, but the processes that lead to them within the body. Resveratrol actually activates proteins called sirtuins in the body.

These proteins are gaining a somewhat mythical reputation, as they have been found to powerfully stave off many health problems, including diabetes, once they are switched on and pointed in the right direction. Therein lies the trick, with the targeting of sirtuins and the proper activation of them.

For diabetes, there is a particular class of sirtuins located in the brain that control and monitor glucose metabolism, a key issue with diabetes. Therefore researchers at the University of Texas Southwest Medical Center delivered resveratrol directly to the brains of mice. The targeted sirtuins were activated, and diabetic symptoms were improved, reducing high blood sugar and insulin levels.

This is a groundbreaking discovery, because it specifically shows the cause and effect process of resveratrol on a specific health problem, rather than just looking at the end result. Therefore instead of taking an all encompassing supplement, drugs can be developed in the future that specifically target sirtuins in the brain for Type 2 Diabetes patients, and those predisposed to the disease.

It also means that more specific work will be done to see which sitruins are activated by resveratrol to cause which effects. It’s a huge step to creating effective, reliable and safe resveratrol drugs that can combat some of the worst health problems on the planet. Thanks to this research at the University of Texas Southwest Medical Center, a resveratrol based medication for diabetes that targets sirtuins in the brain is now a real possibility.

The Harvard Medical School has been at the forefront of the resveratrol research process for quite some time, led by Dr. David Sinclair, perhaps the most respected expert on the compound and the benefits it may provide.

It’s clear now though that he’s not the only person supporting those claims, and now many new companies are beginning to develop drugs and products that could offer a huge array of health benefits, including the highly sought after life extension principles that earlier work on insects and animals showed.

The key to the benefits provided by resveratrol may be sitruin activators in the body. Resveratrol activates sirtuins, which are a specific type of protein in the body. These proteins are believed to help the body cleanse itself from toxins. This means that they can help prevent diseases, they can boost the immune system and they can even help to extend the healthy life of a person.

This extension of life is mostly caused by the prevention of major ailments and disruptions. When mice are placed on a caloric restriction diet, eating approximately 30 percent less calories, then they experience an increase in life expectancy of about 40 percent. Activating sirtuins within the body is thought to be able to provide these same benefits, to the same degree or potentially even stronger.

What kinds of diseases can be combated, and what kinds of benefits can be offered? Running down the list, you’ll see that you’ll find the majority of deadly diseases that plague the world’s otherwise healthy population. This includes diabetes, cardiovascular disease, several types of cancer including colon and lung, Alzheimer’s and more, all of which can be potentially fought off or prevented through sirtuin activation.

Sirtris Pharmaceuticals, named for sirtuins, is in the process of developing clinical drugs that can help activate sitruins and provide all of these great benefits in a safe, consistent matter. They don’t make use of resveratrol itself, but rather they make use of drugs that copy the effects of the compound within the human body.

The compounds they have developed are even stronger and more potent than resveratrol itself, which means they can be administered in smaller, more manageable doses. It also means that the benefits could be even more far reaching than what science has thus far found.

Sirtris Pharaceuticals is testing many of their new drugs and compounds in clinical trials already. Some of their compounds include SRT-501, SRT-2104 and SRT-1720, all of which are chemical impersonators of resveratrol.

Their SRT-501 compound is being put up against colon cancer and multiple myeloma; SRT-2104 is in trials for Type 2 diabetes and SRT-1720 has already been found to increase healthy life expectancy in mice. So far, as results are coming to come in as being successful, there has also been a healthy lack of side effects, meaning the research and trails are both continuing to more advanced degrees.

So how is all of this really possible? What is it about sitruin activators that can help to slow, reverse or stall the aging process? Researchers now view many aging related ailments and changes as the inevitable result of ongoing DNA mutations as you grow older. However, Dr. Sinclair actually points to these mutations changing or removing the presence of sirtuins. Therefore by combating this problem, and working on sirtuin activation in the right ways at the right time, aging can actually be reversed or stopped.

Sirtris Pharamaceuticals is one of many companies and researchers that are optimistic about this and similar potential benefits. Sirtris has a goal of putting out to the market legitimate longevity drugs within five years. With the research they have thus far backing their claims, that seems to be a strong possibility. Of course, drug development and trials are no sure thing, and early results from effectiveness trials won’t be available for at least another year.

Until then, everyone looking for the next miracle drug will have to wait. Research clearly shows that resveratrol, through sirtuin activation, can provide a slew of healthy benefits. Now, can those benefits be harnessed into a clinically proven drug for the masses?
