Supplements Available

With the surge of research confirming the amazing properties of Resveratrol , there has been an equal response from marketers and companies pitching their Resveratrol products.  Resveratrol supplements are available mostly as capsules. The main points to consider when choosing a Resveratrol supplement that is right for you are the following:

Dosage – there is some evidence pointing to low dose Resveratrol being just as effective and without any potential side effects such as chelation of minerals from the body. There is a mentality that more is better and the promoters and marketers are definitely exploiting this belief. In the case of Resveratrol, the research does not indicate that the more the better.

Manufacturing Process – Resveratrol is extremely sensitive to oxygen. So oxidation and breakdown can limit the effectiveness of the product – knowing how the product is produced and packaged is important. Some research found that off the shelf generic Resveratrol products contained far less active Resveratrol than stated.

Price – getting a quality product that delivers the quantity it advertises is important.  Comparing product based solely on price can be misguided as other factors as mentioned above need to be considered.  For the most part, expect to spend $30 – $90/month for a sufficient daily supply of product.

In November 2007 ConsumerLab.com, an independent testing company, reviewed 13 resveratrol supplement products. The brands tested included French Parad’ox (Arkopharma), Purevinol (Pure Prescriptions), Resvert (Young Again), Resvera-Gold (Douglas Laboratories), Revatrol (Renaissance Health), Transmax (Biotivia), Vinotrol (NeXtten), and Zyflamend (New Chapter), as well as products from Country Life, Jarrow Formulas, Life Extension, Longevinex, and Swanson. Except for two of the supplement brands, the rest were found to correctly state the amount of resveratrol in their product. The Life Extension product contained only about 5mg of resveratrol per pill although it was labeled as containing 20mg. The brand Resvert (Young Again) contained about 14.5mg per pill, but was labeled as containing 25mg of resveratrol.

A brand that has recently gained popularity on the internet and news coverage is Resveratrol Ultra. It contains acai extract in addition to resveratrol. Reviews of Resveratrol Ultra by TheResveratrolReviews.com and Resveratrolexposed.net claimed that it was effective in lifting overall energy levels and losing weight. Other featured brands on these review websites include RezV 2000, VitalRezV, Certified Resveratrol, and HealthRezV. Resveratrolexposed.net advised that some resveratrol products yield few or no results because of their poor method of extraction. Products which are of high quality contain resveratrol which is freeze dried immediately after extraction to counteract the instability of the resveratrol molecule.

Relentless Improvement is a brand of resveratrol supplements that advertises to be a fully documented high-grade resveratrol. It claims that its low emodin content and high purity extract result in a high quality supplement that avoids an undesirable laxative and flatulence effect. Another brand (Club Natural) developed by Dr. Ray Sahelian contains 10mg of resveratrol extracted from the root of Polygonum cuspidatum. Its suggested dose is one capsule with breakfast a few times a week.

A new resveratrol supplement, Resvida, was launched by DSM Nutritional Products in March 2008. DSM stated that their product is the purest form of resveratrol currently found in the marketplace and recommends use at 30-150 mg per day. It comes with a safety package and is available in both crystalline form (with 99% purity) and tablet grade form (with 90% purity).

Some supplements have recently come under fire for their claims. In October 2008, the FDA reported that Vintage Resveratrol was being promoted by Natural Biology as a cure for cancer and other health problems, violating the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act which controls such claims. Another company, Biotivia, was told to amend some claims advertised for its resveratrol supplements. There are many more supplements available on the market and all should be taken with caution.
