Resveratrol supplements

With the surge of research confirming the amazing properties of Resveratrol , there has been an equal response from marketers and companies pitching their Resveratrol products.  Resveratrol supplements are available mostly as capsules. The main points to consider when choosing a Resveratrol supplement that is right for you are the following:

Dosage – there is some evidence pointing to low dose Resveratrol being just as effective and without any potential side effects such as chelation of minerals from the body. There is a mentality that more is better and the promoters and marketers are definitely exploiting this belief. In the case of Resveratrol, the research does not indicate that the more the better.

Manufacturing Process – Resveratrol is extremely sensitive to oxygen. So oxidation and breakdown can limit the effectiveness of the product – knowing how the product is produced and packaged is important. Some research found that off the shelf generic Resveratrol products contained far less active Resveratrol than stated.

Price – getting a quality product that delivers the quantity it advertises is important.  Comparing product based solely on price can be misguided as other factors as mentioned above need to be considered.  For the most part, expect to spend $30 – $90/month for a sufficient daily supply of product.

Not enough is known scientifically about resveratrol’s effects on humans to recommend taking resveratrol supplements. Sinclair of Sirtris Pharmaceuticals claimed in 2009 that a resveratrol-based pill which would extend people’s lives and slow down aging-related diseases would be available to the public within five years. On the other hand, Austad, deputy scientific director at the American Federation for Aging Research, cautioned that it will be another 30 years before it is known whether resveratrol is effective in changing the rate of aging.

However, resveratrol supplements are very popular. Most supplements available in the USA contain extracts of the root of Polygonnum cuspidatum or Japanese knotweed, a medicinal plant used in Asian folk medicine to treat inflammation, heart and liver conditions, and skin and lipid problems. Polygonnum cuspidatum contains up to 187 mg/kg of resveratrol in the dried root and can be concentrated up to a 50% level in extract form. Supplements are also made from red wine extracts and red grape extracts containing resveratrol and other polyphenols. Resveratrol can also be found in the skin of the fruit of the mulberry, which is sold as a nutritional supplement. Some of the supplements sold are made from organic French grapes and enhanced with extracts from Polygonnum cuspidatum. The end product is claimed to be more potent and consistent in quality.

Resveratrol supplements range in concentrations from 10 to over 200mg of resveratrol. These concentrations are 5 to 100 times of that found in an average 5-ounce glass of red wine. Different supplements also have different instructions for recommended dosage. The prices vary from $10 to $40 a bottle.

Some supplements of resveratrol are in liquid form, including HPMC, Sorbitol, and Tween 80. The companies offering it in this form hope to increase the absorption of resveratrol into the body. Other companies also claim their supplement is better absorbed since their resveratrol pill or powder is micronized. Micronization involves the process of significantly reducing the average particle size of a compound. Still other supplements are designed to be used as a transdermal patch, similar to a nicotine patch.

Since resveratrol is a dietary supplement, not a pharmaceutical drug, it is not required to pass Food and Drug Administration tests of safety and efficacy. This explains why resveratrol supplements are widely sold without sufficient scientific evidence that they really produce beneficial effects in humans. It also means that when consumers purchase a bottle of resveratrol supplements they cannot be fully assured that what is claimed on the label is actually in the bottle.
