A neutraceutical supplement manufacturer, NutraGrape, based in North Carolina, has recently partnered with Lazarex Cancer Foundation, and is donating a portion of their sales to this organization which assists terminally ill cancer patients.

Nutragrape’s product line exclusively uses muscadine grapes in their resveratrol and other supplements. The owners point to research that demonstrates these grapes have the highest concentrations of naturally occuring resveratrol than any other plant. Muscadine grapes including their skins and seeds are prominently featured in the ingredients of most of their product line of supplements.

Muscadine grapes, which are native to and are the official fruit of the state of North Carolina, apparently have a diverse quantity of other naturally occuring chemical compounds that are equally beneficial to human health and prevention.

Resveratrol is a member of a family of chemical compounds refered to as phytochemicals. Phytochemicals are plant chemicals that have disease preventive and protective attributes. There are more than 1000 known phytochemicals. Plants manufacture these chemicals to protect themselves and research has shown that phytochemicals can protect people against ailments and disease as well.

There are numerous types of phytochemicals and every one functions uniquely. The following list outlines some of the functions phytochemicals including resveratrol serve in enhancing our health and prevent disease and ailments.

1) Antioxidant Function- The majority of phytochemicals function as antioxidants which protect our cells from oxidative damage and inhibit the risk of developing specific kinds of cancerous cells. Examples of these phytochemicals with antioxidant activity are allyl sulfides (onions, leeks, garlic), carotenoids (fruits, carrots), flavonoids (fruits, vegetables), polyphenols (tea, grapes).

2) Hormonal Function – Isoflavones, found in soy, mimic human estrogens and assist in reducing menopausal symptoms and the onset of osteoporosis.

3) Activation of enzymes – Indoles, which are present in cabbages, activate enzymes that inhibit over production of estrogen that may reduce the risk for breast cancer. Other phytochemicals, which interfere with enzymes, are protease inhibitors (soy and beans), terpenes (citrus fruits and cherries).

4) DNA Replication Inhibitors – Saponins present in beans inhibit replication of cell DNA, thus inhibiting the increase of cancer cells. Capsaicin, found in hot peppers, shields DNA from carcinogens.

5) Anti -Bacterial Function – Garlic has anti-bacterial properties from the phytochemical allicin .

6) Anti-Adhesion Property – A few phytochemicals bond to cell walls thus restricting the adhesion of pathogens to human cell walls. Cranberries contain proanthocyanidins which are responsible for the fruit’s anti-adhesion properties. Eating fresh cranberries or drinking cranberry juice will decrease the risk of urinary tract infection and can augment dental health.

Japanese Knotweed is a large, herbaceous perennial plant, native to eastern Asia in Japan, China and Korea. In the US and Europe the species is very abundant and has been categorized as invasive in many countries.
This seemingly obnoxious and prolific weed turns out to be the cheapest most economical source of resveratrol currently available, and therefore, is the primary source of resveratrol in the billion dollar supplements market.

Cities are presently inundated by it – over taking hillsides and proliferating, much to the dismay of city planners and home gardener’s. This species expells its own natural herbicide which kills much of the plant life around it, allowing it to proliferate, grow and spread.

Resveratrol is manufactured by plants like, grapes and Japanese knotweed, as an antibiotic specifically to battle diseases, fungi, bacteria, and heat resistance. Japanese knotweed is loaded with resveratrol, evidenced externally by its invasive and tenacious growth and weed ubiquity in North America and Europe.

Nature proves again that what we consider noxious or obnoxious may indeed be a hidden source of incredible ingredients that benefit us in unknown ways at present.
