Recent laboratory resveratrol research uncovered the potential of this molecule in helping to inhibit the development of osteoporosis without the health side effects. The study demonstrated that this molecular compound is a phytoestrogen – it binds to and turns on estrogen receptors – so the researchers deduced that resveratrol may have the potential in effecting bone metabolism and ultimately reduce the risk of bone mass atrophy.

Research was done using cell cultures in addition to lab rats that were susceptible to bone atrophy. Together, the data demonstrated that Resveratrol treatment had a positive effect on bone-forming activities.

Resveratrol activates genes necessary in bone formation and switches off genes involved in bone decay. The net effect was the precursor bone cells converted to bone-forming cells, called osteoblasts, and there was a restriction of the creation of bone-destroying cells known as osteoclasts. The end result was the bones getting stronger with augmented levels of bone mineral and bone structural proteins.

Unlike another treatment using a hormones, known as HRT(hormone replacement therapy), Resveratrol not only promotes the improvement in bone strength and resistance to osteoporosis, it also is known to prevent cancerous tumor growths, while HRT has been shown to increase the chance of cancer. Resveratrol actually activates a tumor suppressing protein known as FOXO3A in addition to activating proteins that lead to the promotion of bone growth.

The bone-forming effects related to resveratrol, along with its lack of cancer side effects that HRT is linked to, suggests this compound may be an ideal natural remedy for the prevention of osteoporosis. As with most research on Resveratrol, the results were induced in the lab with laboratory animals or cell cultures, so while encouraging and compelling, tests on humans have yet to determine the efficacy of Resveratrol on this condition.

While previously published lab rat studies displayed that extra-high resveratrol dosages, equivalent to 1500 bottles of wine or many dietary supplement capsules(1500+ milligram human dosage), was efficacious in preventing the negative effects of a high-calorie diet, the smallest dosage that genetically emulates a restricted caloric diet was unknown, till now.

A compelling study on gene arrays, by William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital and Lifegen Technologies researchers in Madison, Wisconsin, demonstrated that dosages of approximately 350 mgs/day of resveratrol (4.9 mg per kg of body weight) creates a gene activation profile close to a calorie inhibited diet. Super high resveratrol doses (greater than 500 milligrams) are not necessary to activate the gene and potentially produce side effects.

Both caloric reduction and resveratrol have displayed the ability to extend the life of all life forms, ranging from single-cell organisms (yeast cells) to more complex forms of life (fruit flies, roundworms) and warm-blooded mammals (laboratory rats).

Potential Resveratrol side effects of high resveratrol dosage supplements are numerous.
“Once mega-doses of resveratrol (more than 500 mg) began to be employed, side effects like anemia, Achilles heel tendonitis, anxiety reactions, numbness in the fingers, began to be reported,” says Bill Sardi, spokesperson for Longevinex “This is probably because resveratrol is a copper chelator and excessive chelation will impair the availability of copper which is needed for collagen formation and nerve regeneration,” he says. “Resveratrol is relatively safe, but not absolutely safe at any dosage. There are drawbacks,” he adds.

Some internet Resveratrol supplement sellers , who have no medical background or scientific research supporting their Resveratrol products, recklessly offer capsules with mega Resveratrol doses well above 350mg/day. There is also research showing that super high resveratrol doses restrict the absorption of folic acid (vitamin B9), an important nutrient required for DNA repair. [European Journal Nutrition. It is important to note that large resveratrol dosages have not been examined in humans for extended consumption.
Marketing claims by resveratrol supplement manufacturers that their capsules produce greater activation of the Sirt 1 gene(the DNA-repair gene) should also be questioned because an animal study demonstrated over-activation (greater than 7.5 fold) of this gene encourages heart failure in animals. [Circulation Research 2007] In addition, many studies have shown that activation of the Sirt1 gene requires only a nominal amount of Resveratrol – 10 – 15mg.

The health and longevity benefits of Resveratrol seem to numerous from all the research, but the most efficacious Resveratrol dosage is still unclear. Taking the “More is Better” attitude that is fomented by aggressive marketers may lead consumers to additional problems from the over dosing side effects that are potentially prevalent. There is one company, Resvantage , that offers a low dose resveratrol of 15 mg that they say allows people to get a resveratrol dose more in line with a lot of the research, that suggests this is the amount needed to activate the Sert 1 proteins in the DNA, without the concern of potential side effects from large dosage resveratrol supplements.

If you have had any personal issues with side effects from taking large dosages of Resveratrol feel free to post a comment below.

The popular molecule known as resveratrol has been on the radar of the medical and scientific community and the public alike for many years now, thanks to many studies done on its miraculous effects showing tumor arrest, heart health, and powerful antioxidant properties. But what about possible side effects of resveratrol also known as resveratrol side effects?

Resveratrol is found in many different plants, including peanuts and Japanese Knotweed and dark skinned fruits such as pomegranates, blueberries, and cranberries. Resveratrol is also found in grapes, fueling many articles on the health benefits of red wine. To be sure, if you over imbibe red wine, you will have side effects, though not from an overdose of resveratrol. To get the amount of resveratrol into your body that is normally used in studies, you would have to drink several bottles daily. Instead, manufacturers have developed resveratrol supplements, and they are available in varying dosages and strengths. While long-term side effects of resveratrol supplementation in humans are not yet known, many positive resveratrol side effects have been reported by both scientists and resveratrol users. However, there are some points to keep in mind.

First, it is important to know that resveratrol does have mild estrogenic activity that has not yet been evaluated in humans, so until more is known it is recommended that woman with estrogen-sensitive conditions, including some cancers, consult with their health practitioner before taking resveratrol supplements to avoid any possible side effects. It is also recommended that resveratrol supplementation be avoided by children and women who are pregnant, nursing, or trying to conceive, to avoid possible anti-growth side effects. Also, because resveratrol does act as a blood thinner (one of the reasons it has been noted as heart-healthy), it is suggested that people already on blood thinning medication avoid resveratrol supplementation unless recommended by their doctor, in order to avoid any adverse side effects. The same goes for others that are using prescription drugs – always consult with your doctor first.

Resveratrol Side Effects

Negative side effects have been noted in volunteer participants taking mega doses (500 – 1000 mg) of resveratrol. While these resveratrol side effects were reversible, they are worth considering. The side effects experienced included diarrhea, abnormal blood tests, over thinning of the blood, headaches, and anxiety. Current recommendations to avoid these side effects are to start moderate (20 – 50 mg doses) and increase gradually, staying below the 500 mg dose, and taking into consideration your own body size and current health status.

Even with the above considerations, resveratrol supplements have been sold for several years now, with no major side effects (i.e. non-reversible) reported. Rather, the positive side effects of resveratrol are becoming widely known and discussed. Users often report that the side effects they experience from taking resveratrol supplementation range from higher and more prolonged energy and endurance, greater mental clarity, and better sleeping habits. Scientific studies in the lab report that positive side effects of resveratrol include lowered cholesterol, prolonged life spans in test animals and insects, anti tumor and cancer development properties, metabolic balance, and anti fungal and microbial properties. With side effects like that, the horizon looks rosy for this molecule, and we can all look forward to continuing research as we further our quest for a longer and healthier life.
