In a recent study by researchers from The University Of Rome, Resveratrol was found to inhibit the replication of the Flu virus – specifically influenza A virus – in mice. The researches found that replication of the virus was reduced up to 87.5% when resveratrol was administered after the first 3 hours of exposure.

Mice given resveratrol verses mice given a placebo had a 40% increase in survival rate. In fact, the level of virus found in the lungs of resveratrol treated mice was 98% less than those given the placebo.

The effecacy of resveratrol to impede host-cell functions that flu viruses depend on suggests important advantages, the university of Rome research team state. In comparison with current anti-flu drugs, resveratrol would be less likely to activate resistance by flu viruses, and it would likely be effective for all types and strains of flu virus.

This is very compelling research considering the hype and fear currently swirling around in the news media about the swine flu virus. Considering all the other health benefits of resveratrol that seem to exhibit so much promise, this is another important factor to consider when choosing to take resveratrol supplements.
