Resveratrol Anti-Inflammatory Action

Researchers from the Imperial College of London, UK did a study on the effectiveness of resveratrol and found it produced broad anti-inflammatory actions that have potential for applications in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and possibly even arthritis.

Lead researcher, Louise Donnelly, and her team examined the anti-inflammatory effects of
resveratrol on human airway epithelial cells – samples of normal lung cells in the lab.

Their study demonstrated that resveratrol has novel non-steroidal anti-inflammatory activity that may have
applications for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. Resveratrol seemed to mimic the effects on the cells similar to glucocorticosteroids the traditional steroids used for the treatment of asthma.

Furthermore, the scientists observed that because resveratrol’s mechanism of action is not
via the estrogen or the glucocorticoid receptor, it might be
beneficial in inflammatory diseases where glucocorticosteroids have proved to
be ineffective, such as COPD, steroid-resistant asthma and arthritis.

The researchers concluded that resveratrol could very well be integrated into novel anti-inflammatory
therapies, upon further understanding about how the mechanism(s) of action, that the resveratrol molecule utilizes to exert its beneficial effects, works.

Since this study was published, it is now much easier to buy resveratrol supplements to that may prove efficacious in this area of health.
