Resveratrol and BiPolar Brain Disorder
This led her on a journey of discovery for a cure which included a pharmacy full of different drugs that created a plethora of side effects with minimal results. From there she studied Buddhism and practiced meditation to control her thoughts, and then started studying biological psychology to better understand the chemical processes in the brain to try and find some clues and insight into her condition.
She started experimenting with dietary restriction and supplementation and noticed some changes in her mental condition associate with food containing glutens (glutamate).
Finally, in 2007, after reading about the life extending research and health benefits of Resveratrol, she started taking 100mg of the Resveratrol supplement every day. The change was gradual so it wasn’t very noticeable for her initially. She realized she had become more fit and calm and her bipolar haze had vanished! Friends and associates began commenting on how “mature” she had become and how much she had changed.
A scientist she had contacted showed her a study displaying that the brain cells of people with Bipolar Disorder have a problem with cell metabolism. Research she had read about resveratrol revealed that it improved mitochondrial function and protects against metabolic disease. In addition, she also discovered that Resveratrol inhibited excitatory synaptic transmission in a lab rat’s hippocampus from other studies, because it works by suppressing glutamate-induced currents. Glutamate; there it was again. This confirmed for her why the Resveratrol was effective on her from her personal experiences with the effect of glutens on her brain chemistry.
In the end, the woman notes that beyond the compelling research that points to the efficacy of Resveratrol on managing or potentially even eliminating her Bipolar Disorder, she personally feels calm, normal again and just great!
